Is Caffeine Free Coffee Less Acidic?
Coffee can be an intimately personal choice that brings forth an array of flavors, aromas and characteristics that appeal to various palates and dietary preferences. For those sensitive to its acidity that can cause tingling sensations and stomach distress, there are options available that can reduce its sourness – decaffeinated coffee is one such solution; selecting roast level appropriately also has an impactful impact. Low acid coffee such as Alex’s Low Acid Organic Coffee may also help with this endeavor.
While caffeinated coffee ranks higher on the pH scale than both apples and bananas, when compared with regular coffee it remains acidic. On average, decaf usually falls around 4 on this scale but this could vary depending on its variety, terroir, decaffeination process (which may alter flavor profiles), etc.
Coffee in general contains some acidity; however, people’s reactions can differ as some compounds present can trigger gastric acids which release and cause heartburn-like sensations or even tingling sensations. Therefore, it is wise to limit consumption as well as utilize proper brewing methods which limit ground exposure to air.
