Is it Healthy to Drink Coffee?
An early morning cup of coffee can be an enjoyable ritual for many. It can increase energy levels, make us feel more alert, and improve focus. Coffee may even provide health benefits like lower risks of clogged arteries, heart disease and certain cancers; some experts even claim it may protect against diabetes and depression.
But is drinking coffee healthy? That depends on your method of preparation. Limiting added sugars and saturated fats as they may have negative repercussions for your health is paramount, yet making small modifications to your beverage still allows for enjoyment!
Filtered water is ideal for making coffee because it removes most lead and other contaminants found in tap water, plus can keep your body hydrated better. Also, try drinking your caffeine-rich beverage before noon in order to optimize its effects as an alerting stimulant and avoid late evening consumption which may impede sleep quality.
Avoid adding milk or creamer to your coffee, as these typically contain added sugars and saturated fats which can negate its positive effects. If necessary, select skim or non-dairy options so as to minimize fat content; adding in protein powder or collagen powder as an addition can also boost nutritional value for weight loss efforts.
Studies have linked moderate coffee consumption with high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases; this trend was most evident among those who consumed three or more cups per day, but other factors like smoking or diet may impact cardiovascular risk among coffee drinkers so this should be taken into consideration when making such claims.
Studies indicate that coffee consumption may reduce your risk of liver disease, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases as well as depression and type 2 diabetes. One such study suggests that its protective benefits stem from its phytochemicals which contain anti-inflammatory compounds to support brain health.
Concerns have been expressed over coffee’s health effects, citing possible links with bladder, pancreatic and possibly other cancers; however, these accusations have largely been disproved as they likely result from fishing expeditions or inferior research methodologies.
Overall, it is safe to consume three to five cups of brewed coffee daily before noon if taken early in the day. Just be mindful of adding sugars and stay under 400 milligrams (roughly four or six 8-ounce cups for adults). Decaffeinated or caffeinated drinks during afternoon hours are easy ways to stay within this safe range and drinking too much can even cause dehydration through increased frequency of urination; which has diuretic properties.
