Many people rely on coffee to enhance their mood and boost energy at the start of each day, but is this really healthy? A new study suggests that moderate coffee consumption – three cups or less daily – could potentially improve health outcomes and extend lifespan; too much caffeine consumption however can cause digestive issues, anxiety and poor sleep; to get the most from your cup of joe, try these tips from our health coaches:

1. Support Heart Health. Coffee contains potassium, magnesium and vitamin B which all promote cardiovascular wellness. Furthermore, drinking coffee regularly may decrease your risk of high blood pressure as well as reduce cholesterol levels.

2. Protect Against Type 2 Diabetes.

Drinking one to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily could help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, according to researchers’ analysis from a long-term nutrition study. Those who consumed at least two cups were 17% less likely to develop the disease than those who didn’t drink any – possibly due to antioxidants found in coffee helping control inflammation that can contribute to its development – something no-coffee drinkers didn’t do at all!

3. Improves brain health. A recent study demonstrated that elderly adults who regularly consumed coffee had lower risks of dementia and cognitive impairments. This may be attributed to its combination of phytochemicals and caffeine which have both been shown to reduce oxidative stress in the body while simultaneously improving cognitive performance.

4. Facilitates Bowel Movement.

A cup of coffee can actually aid digestion by increasing gastrin production – the hormone responsible for initiating intestinal contractions and starting the bowel movement process. This effect is caused by chlorogenic acid and caffeine present in coffee which also possess anti-inflammatory properties that fight chronic inflammation in the gut.

5. It Can Aid Menopause. Women who consume more than two cups of coffee per day could experience hot flashes, which cause sudden feelings of heat and sweating, potentially disrupting mood and creating discomfort; this symptom can typically be managed with hormone therapy treatments.

Overall, experts agree that most adults can safely consume up to four cups of coffee daily before noon; if you are sensitive to caffeine or have other health concerns it would be advisable to cut back to three. Caffeine should be consumed responsibly to avoid raising your heart rate and leading to high blood pressure levels that damage arteries and kidneys, or inducing anxiety and jitters when tired or stressed. Too much caffeine consumption may increase heart rate, leading to high blood pressure that damages both arteries and kidneys; furthermore it can trigger anxiety attacks when taken when your mind and body are already feeling overwhelmed. Coffee may also cause acid reflux by relaxing the gastroesophageal sphincter and allowing stomach acid to come leaking back up your esophagus. To combat this, always consume your coffee with meals and choose low-cal add-ins like skim or almond milk as low-calorie options; additionally, sugary or fatty drinks should be avoided altogether.
