Is Matcha Tea Healthier Than Coffee?
Matcha offers many health advantages, but is it truly superior to coffee? In this episode of our podcast, Chef Koj and Tim Spector examine matcha’s history in Japanese culture before exploring its rapid rise as an international wellness trend. Additionally, they present current scientific studies assessing matcha’s effects on metabolism, brain function and gut health–comparison with coffee’s impacts.
Matcha differs from coffee in that its process involves steeping whole leaves in boiling water while matcha uses powdered tea that’s whisked into hot water to alter plant chemistry and increase chlorophyll and amino acid production, producing vibrant green-colored beverages with high antioxidant levels and refreshing tastes. Furthermore, its benefits don’t produce any of the usual side-effects associated with caffeine intake like jitters.
Both coffee and matcha contain caffeine, so which one is healthier depends on your individual needs and tolerance levels. Coffee has been extensively researched, with three to four cups daily generally considered safe for most individuals. Matcha contains less caffeine yet still causes stimulation; this could trigger jitters in some. Luckily, L-theanine may provide relaxation benefits to combat caffeine’s stimulant properties and prevent its side effects.
Matcha stands out from coffee as being an especially rich source of polyphenols – plant compounds with potent antioxidant properties – making it more concentrated source of polyphenols than coffee, with health benefits including reduced cholesterol and reduced risk for heart disease and cancer, plus magnesium for blood sugar regulation and stress relief.
Matcha can also help improve oral and dental health; its catechin EGCG serves as an antibacterial, helping stop cavities-causing bacteria from proliferating. Furthermore, matcha is known for naturally brightening up smiles with its whitening properties.
