Is the Coffee Healthy?
Coffee is a beloved morning ritual for millions of people around the world, yet many question its healthfulness and enjoyment. A few simple adjustments in your coffee habits could make all the difference; from choosing different beans to using filters for optimal brewing results. Nutritionist Amy Czerwony MS RD suggests filter use “to reduce excess oxidation and keep calories down,” she suggests adding spices or vanilla extract for increased flavor without incurring extra calorie counts.
Coffee contains caffeine and has long been associated with improved alertness, concentration, and reaction time for tasks requiring sustained focus – such as driving or flying airplanes – but its benefits extend much further: this stimulant may reduce diabetes risks as well as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s conditions; according to World Health Organization studies regular coffee drinkers have reduced risks of heart disease and cancer.
Recent research supports the notion that moderate coffee drinking is generally healthy for most adults. A 10-year study, tracking over 447,000 American adults who consumed between three and five cups per day of coffee, showed they were 16% less likely to die early from any cause, and 31% less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes compared to non-coffee drinkers.
Studies have also demonstrated the protective potential of antioxidants found in coffee against rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease and liver cancer. A 2015 Journal of the National Cancer Institute study revealed that those consuming four or more caffeinated coffee daily had a 20% reduced risk of melanoma, an extremely dangerous form of skin cancer.
Coffee enthusiasts often opt for whole beans that have been freshly ground to prevent any potential oxidation, which they believe would alter both flavor and beneficial chemicals found within. Others choose an infuser basket coffeemaker which allows for longer steep times which give their coffee a richer flavor profile.
Selecting premium beans is key to crafting great coffee beverages, and choosing organic or fair trade beans should be at the top of your list. Also experiment with different roasts until you discover one you enjoy the most!
Be sure to drink water with each cup of coffee as this can act as a diuretic, which is especially important if you’re already dehydrated. Avoid drinking coffee late at night as this may interfere with sleep; caffeine typically takes about six to seven hours to leave your system, so if insomnia becomes an issue it might be worthwhile trying a decaf version of your favorite beverage.
