Kombucha tea (sometimes referred to as Manchurian mushroom tea or kombucha tea) has been enjoyed for over 2,000 years, providing benefits in terms of gut health, metabolism and immunity support.
Contrary to its name, mushroom tea isn’t made from mushrooms but instead comes from a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY), producing an acidic vinegar-like beverage with potential health benefits.
1. Promotes Weight Loss
Kombucha mushroom tea, once a humble fermented beverage passed down through generations in East Asia, has recently become the latest wellness trend. Kombucha tea is created by adding a culture of bacteria and yeast, known as a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast), to an infusion of black or green tea leaves mixed with sugar, then allowing the fermentation process. This creates an acidic beverage similar to sparkling apple cider; more commonly referred to as the “tea fungus” or ‘Kombucha mushroom” (Medusomyces gisevii is its Latin name).
An ancient beverage first utilized over 2,200 years ago in China was known for its detoxifying and revitalizing effects, before quickly spreading across Russia and Japan where its benefits became part of local cultures and languages – most likely including its name; which likely originates with Korean physician who gifted this tea as a remedy for digestive complaints to Japanese Emperor in 414 A.D.
